Default Some Web Design advice please?

Hi there, i was thinking about starting up my own web design site from home with a friend of mine, we are both digital artists and have the know how and so on, but my question is how do i advertise to get clients online and make my web page visible to anyone seeking this service?

There are a lot of designers out there im just wondering how the competition will be and is it a viable business to go into right now?

I could do the blogging i quite enjoy writing and seem to be pretty good at it too, hope that does not sound like im blowing my own trumpet? But you are right this stuff is all time consuming so im hoping we can get the time to fit it all in, i think stick to the most important things at first and then add on where we can later on??

That is an area with a lot of competition....everyone who can design a banner considers themselves to be a designer....
As does every person who can code a site......
Gotta be thousands on the web.....

There is so much more evolved.....
When you ask how to advertise....that tells me you do not know enough to get into the business....
How about SEO?....do you know that?
Do you know how to write content for the SEs AND the customers? What about backlinks? What colors push the prospects buttons?

Do not mean to be so harsh....
If that is your dream...by all means go for it....
But be prepared to take some hard knocks......

"When you are up to your a** in alligators...it is hard to remember that your objective was to drain the swamp"......

My advice to anyone wanting to get into any business is to first learn some solid marketing skills.

I am a designer/programmer/seo/just everything

But... this isn't enough on its own to start a proper business.

You must know how to get a high enough caliber of customer so that you will make more than enough to pay your bills.

With so much competition you have to be super-lazer focussed in your target audience, otherwise you are just competing with all the big players.

Your homepage must be set up in such a way as to gain trust with your customers, keep an eye on pay-per-click adverts for web design on google over a period of weeks - see which companies stay up there - they are the ones to copy as they must be making money to keep the advertising going.

Trying to come up with a site that converts visitors to customers costs $$$$$

(Which is why copywriters are called copy-writers - they copy and change the words of what already works!)

Getting started is the most difficult part, even if you go onto odesk or somewhere like that, nobody will take you on as you have no hours unless you have an impressive portfolio and keep on applying for jobs.

But, keep the dream alive.. just keep on learning and depending on how quickly you learn you will get there.

Well, you should focus on a niche. As you said, the competition is hard, think about how your service will be different from the rest and focus on that. Participate in web design forums, blogs and use other social media to spread the word. It'll take time but eventually you'll make it. Compete on price grounds initially and quality work, off course. Do your market research first, it's a prerequisite not just for web design but any business for that matter.
