Default Optimal length of your article.

When choosing an article for your website, make sure the length is optimal for SEO purposes. Articles that are between 200 words and 500 words fit into this category. Even if SEO is not the main reason for writing your article, it’s still a good idea to keep it to this length. Your readers are unlikely to finish your page if it's any longer.
This could have the affect of them having only half of the information you required them to cover. They could then leave with the feeling that your site is too long-winded. Most Internet readers do not read a website page as they would a book, so the shorter the better. A good idea is to splitting one Article into 4 or 5 pages.
If you use headings in a way the reader can select which headings they want to read. This allows your readers to decide if they want to continue reading. If they don’t, they would still have gained the information they required.

Just to note, the minimum length on ezinearticles.com (the biggest article directory) is 250 words. I personally don't go over around 500 words for an article - if it need to be longer, write a book!

I personally think that you can provide valuable information in 500 words or less. YET, some people would much rather invest in more words. I say, as long as what you are presenting your readers with is valuable and quality information, I would say go ahead. Just keep in mind that people's attention span is very limited when doing business online. Therefore, use tactics like bullet points, numbering, sub-headings and other division types of styles which will make it seem shorter and easier to read.
